Cllr Tony Sutton, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Nottingham South, was shocked today by the couldn't-care-less attitude of some of the Labour councillors on the Council's executive board during a debate about housing.
It was clear that a question from Cllr Tony Sutton about the Council's failure to properly consult landlords had ruffled the Labour Party's feathers. After hearing Cllr Sutton's concerns about the lack of consultation about the Council's new policy on houses in multiple occupancy (HMOs), Labour's Cllr David Trimble looked flustered as he blurted out: "but we know what landlords will say!"
Liberal Democrats in Nottingham are committed to pressuring the Council to consult local people properly in all aspects of important local decisions. Tony Sutton said: "The Labour group are saying they already know what landlords think, so why bother talking to them? I think that's arrogant and just plain wrong. I'll keep fighting the Liberal Democrat corner to make sure that this Council does things properly."
Tony is the only non-Labour member to attend the important decision-making Executive Board, and he sees it as his duty to the people of Nottingham to hold the ruling party to account. He said: "Sometimes this Council pays lip-service to consultation with people but doesn't really listen to what they say or involve them afterwards. The result is that local groups sometimes feel that the Council doesn't actually takes any notice of them and just uses them so that it can tick the box and say that they were consulted. That's not good enough! The Council needs to learn to listen and not think it knows best about everything."
