Cllr Dave Oldham was very saddened by the news that Lenton Abbey-born author, Alan Sillitoe, died in April. But Dave says that the author's death has made him even more determined to support the campaign to erect a statue of Alan Sillitoe in Nottingham.
Dave is fully behind the campaign, which is supported by groups like the Alan Sillitoe Memorial Committee and Lenton Abbey Residents' Association, for a statue of Alan Sillitoe to be erected in the local area. They had hoped to see the statue completed in the author's lifetime. Alan Sillitoe was born on Manton Crescent in Lenton Abbey in 1928.
In a tribute to Mr Sillitoe, Dave said: "What a true gentleman Alan was; softly spoken, sincere and honest. He will be remembered for decades to come. We are hoping that in the near future we can have something placed here in Lenton Abbey to commemorate Mr Sillitoe. It was discussed with some of the residents and they felt it would be fitting to have a statue erected in Lenton Abbey."
A new committee was formed with the intention of getting a statue of Alan Sillitoe erected. It is the Sillitoe families wish that the statue being located in the centre of Nottingham itself. The original committee support this as it is their decision to make.
Dave Oldham, Councillor in Lenton Abbey at the time, helped organise getting a plaque erected on the house on Manton Crescent where Mr Sillitoe lived. Thankfully Dave was able to mediate with the current resident of the house to allow this to happen as there underlying issues and concerns they had regarding increased interest in the property.
